A FOOT IN THE DOOR
My favorite author of short stories is Bruce Jay Friedman. I became friendly with Bruce in the two decades prior to his passing in 2020. He’s the one writer I return to over and over – rereading much of his work.
I’m well aware of how tough it is to write humorous prose, but he always made it seem easy. I invariably break out in a grin – and often laugh out loud – at his outrageous humor, offbeat plots, and politically/socially incorrect observations. But underlying the comedic touches lies a core of solid insights into people, especially their foibles and follies – as one critic put it, “a wild and cheerful exhibition of meaningful lunacy.”
I’ve decided to take a try at conveying Bruce’s singular voice by recording my spoken version of one of his wacky short stories, “A Foot in the Door”. Press the player button to hear the story.
I hope you enjoy it.
