THE UPTOWN SIDESTREETS OF MANHATTAN

There are so many unusual townhouses and other structures on the sidestreets of Manhattan’s Upper East and West Sides that I decided to give them a portfolio of their own. Take, for instance, this beauty.

It all began many years ago with the so-called “clapboard” (wood frame) houses, of which a few still remain.

Here are two perspectives on a choice clapboard house.

At the other extreme, this big guy isn’t kidding around.

Still, the slimmer houses offer a distinctive counterpoint.

Well, whaddya know, a white townhouse stands out in the midst of the usual brownstone structures.

Check out these two corner views of a notable residence.

Barbara and I went to a few parties in this townhouse some years ago.

How about the ornamentation here . . .
A very distinguished look.

Such elegant curves.

A little taste of Bulgaria.

Here’s a notable row.

I like the way the tree blends in with the white house.

Some more white on the narrow house above.

And this white beauty boasts its own fire escape.

. . . Speaking of fire escapes . . .

Here’s a rich coloration.

These ornamental trees come back into the picture.

A very delicate look.

A couple of bulges that caught my eye.

Another big guy.

Some vivid contrasts.

Three spires and a water tank.

A chance spotting of this formidable structure one day gave me the idea for this portfolio.

Slim and elegant.

Handsome homes.

One of the most impressive residences.

Windows galore.

And finally, one that’s included here less for its artistic merit than its notoriety – any of you guys ever been here?
