TOM & Jim – 2024

This month, my son Tom Freund, who is a professional singer-songwriter based in Los Angeles, was in town for my 90th birthday; and fortunately we were able to squeeze in a recording session in my living room, I’ve labeled the results TOM & Jim – 2024.

We did three songs from the mid-‘40’s popularized by the Nat King Cole Trio, plus one of my favorite Tom compositions. Tom sang them all over his own guitar and bass accompaniments, with my backing on piano (plus a few vocal efforts and background harmonica on Tom’s composition).

The songs, in the order they’re presented, are:

(Get Your Kicks on) Route 66

Words and music by Robert Troup (1946)

Gee Baby, Ain’t I Good to You

Music by Don Redman, words by Don Redman and Andy Razaf (1944)

             Straighten Up and Fly Right

Words and Music by Nat King Cole and Irving Mills (1944)

             Baby Sitter

Words and music by Tom Freund

(Original available on Tom’s Copper Moon CD album)

I hope you enjoy the 15-minute session as much as I enjoyed recording with my son.
