Jimmy McHugh
My musical blog tribute this month is to one of the most prolific songwriters from the 1920s to the 1950s, Jimmy McHugh. His 500-plus songs were recorded by many of our most popular singers, including Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland and Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday and Peggy Lee.
McHugh collaborated with many lyricists, including Ted Koehler, Al Dubin and Harold Adamson, but probably his finest relationship was with Dorothy Fields, with whom he wrote over 30 songs for the film world. McHugh was inducted onto the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1970.
I’ve selected for the blog a half-dozen of McHugh’s best tunes that I’ve recorded over the years with my favorite vocalist, Annette Sanders. They are (in the order presented):
Let’s Get Lost
I Can’t Give You Anything but Love
I Can’t Believe that You’re in Love with Me
Don’t Blame Me
On the Sunny Side of the Street
A Lovely Way to Spend an Evening

Full liner notes are available on these songs and our performance of them, as well as a list of some of McHugh’s other big hits, which you can access (before, after, or while listening to the songs) by clicking on this link.
