NYC Early Spring 2021 Early Spring in Central Park. Traces of the new season begin to emerge each April. A few flowers appear – – and several more join up. Then the trees burst with blossoms – – blossoms that can stand up to those spindly towers. That roof gizmo seems about to pluck some blossoms off the tree. This tribute to a Pilgrim father stands in an attractive grove near 72nd St. and Fifth Avenue. It’s also a good site for a family picnic. The official name is Conservatory Water, but I’ve always called this the sailboat basin. Uh, uh, here come the cops – – on those huge horses. I like the reflections of Fifth Avenue apartment houses in the sailboat basin. Here’s the southeast view over the sailboat basin. Step back a ways from the sailboat basin and you can frame it with blossoms. Alice and her Wonderland friends. A youthful companion for the Mad Hatter. Alice through the spring blossoms. Teaching an outdoor class on a sparkling spring day. Dogs frolic on the grass across Turtle Pond from Belvedere Castle. The San Remo apartment building dwarfs the Castle. Beyond Delacorte Theatre are the turrets of the Beresford (where I lived 45 years ago). Some new vegetation climbs up to a weathered edifice. More blossoms. Buds against the sky. The foreground rocks form a neat segue to – – the rocks that lead off a series of black & white photos. A castle turret and a spindly tower. Here’s more of the castle. Alice and her athletic friends. The King of Poland commemorating the 1410 Battle of Grunwald. My favorite of these b&w shots. Barbara and the dogs being serenaded on their way home from the park. A couple of spindles in black & white. Here they are in color. The view east at sunrise from our apartment. The moon peeks out from behind an apartment house – – and then breaks loose in black & white. Here’s the full scene from our terrace – – and the same shot in black & white. The moon behind the Carlyle Hotel, but with a tough-to-explain shadow. The same in black & white with the shadow removed.
